Creating a corporate logo : circular 'badge'

Tutorial by Neal Howard
www.AtlantasBestDJ.com

OK, Here is my corporate logo. Below are the step-by-step instructions on how I made it.

I am providing this so you can see some of the techniques I used.

After going through this, you can put your creativity to work to see what you can design.

For this logo I used the Corporate Edition 2 logo set, and Orbs Object library.

The bold text indicates something you need to click on.

corporate badge

Open the LA Graphics logo from Corporate logo set 2.
Click on

Modify

Set Canvas Color

then select white for the canvas color

spacer 1

Remove the shadow from the word Graphics.
Click on the word Graphics so it is displayed in the Element Setter

Click on the button labeled Shadow

spacer 2

De-activate the shadow by clicking on the Shadow toggle button

spacer 3

Next change the text from the word Graphics to the words Atlanta's Best then click the Set Text button.

It is important to click Set Text rather than Add New Text because you want to overwrite the word Graphics.

spacer 4

With the new text Atlanta's Best showing in the element setter, click on the Format button to change the font.

I used the TLC fonts (which is the button below System Fonts) and selected Copperplate

spacer 5

Resize the text Atlanta's Best to a scale of .101

You may use either the sliding scale or just click in the box to the left of the slider, and input your text size.

spacer 6

Click on the Circle button. It is the middle button above the font types.

Change the circle radius to 109 or whatever radius you need. The smaller the number the smaller the circle.

Since we are just dealing with one line right now you want the text to fill the top half of the circle.

spacer 7

To add a second line of text, I chose to duplicate the first line of text. That way the font and size will already be close to what I need.

Click

Modify

Duplicate Logo Element

or the same thing can be accomplished by holding the CTRL key and pressing D.

spacer 8

With two identical lines of text both curving in the same direction you will need to make some changes in the text.
spacer 9

Highlight the text "Atlanta's Best" in the Element Setter

Press the Enter Key once to move the text to the 2nd line, then change the words to be Disc Jockey.

Click the Set Text button.

spacer 10

Because this is the 2nd line of text it will automatically curve in the opposite direction.

Since there are a different number of characters in the 2 lines of text, make them separate elements so you can have more control over their look.

spacer 11

Modify the Character Spacing, and the Circle Radius to make the text appear to wrap around the circle.
spacer 12

spacer 13

Next, delete the elements that will not be part of the final logo.

That is the words Slogan or Tagline. You Pick! and the lines above and below that.

Click on any corporae logo element to have it display in the Element Setter.

Click

Modify

Delete Logo Element

You will get a warning to make sure you meant to delete the element, but don't worry, you are only deleting it from this logo you are currently work on, not the entire system.

Next, import the picture of the microphone.

Click

File

Import Image

(you can import any image from your hard drive. This makes a truly custom corporate logo !)

spacer 14

Browse to the image on your computer, select it, then click Open
spacer 15

As you can see, this object has a white background. That background needs to be removed for this particular logo.
Click on the image you imported to make sure it appears in the Element Setter.

Click

Modify

Remove White

spacer 16

Change the LA graphic to display ABDJ.

Each of those letters is a graphic image.

Since I will be using the A image, I select the L image so that it appears in the Element Setter, then select the Corporate Edition 2 Object Library

spacer 17

Scroll through the library until you see the letter B, select it, then click

Set Image

Again this is to replace one image with another

spacer 18

Continue browsing to find the letter D, but this time click the Add New Image button so it will not replace any of the existing images.

spacer 19

Next find the letter J, and click the Add New Image button again.
spacer 20

You may want to move those letters out of your way for a bit so you can more easily work with the other corporate logo elements.

Next select the Orbs Object Library in the element setter and look for Orbs_01 (it will probably be the first one you see)

spacer 21

Resize it using the Scale slide and center the Orb_01 in the middle of the logo.

Next click on the other elements and place them where they should be as well. (the microphone and the A, B, D, and J)

spacer 22

Next you need to send the Orb back so you can see the other elements.

Click on the yellow Orb

Modify

Send Farther

spacer 23

Continue sending the Yellow Orb farther and farther back until all the other images are visible.

You just don't want to send it all the way to the very back, because it would then not be visible behind the blue title circle.

spacer 24

spacer 25

At this point you can resize the canvas by clicking in the lower right corner and dragging the canvas to the size you choose.
Remember to save the file (name it whatever you wish, its your corporate logo!), and if you want to use it for letterhead or logos on your website, you'll need to export the file as well.

I hope this has been helpful.

Now see how creative you can be to design your own. (Please don't copy mine or others as it will make them both less original) Send me an email and let me know if this is helpful or not, or if you have any additional questions.
